What’s the award about?
When MTV launched in 1981, it was the first television channel to offer to American viewers the possibility to watch music video clips at all times. Targeting mostly young adults, the channel quickly became a staple on American television.
In 1984, the already well-known channel organized its first MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) to reward the artists of the best-performing music video of the year. The event, hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd, brought together all of the biggest stars and rewarded them for their music video. That year, Michael Jackson notably won the award for the Best Overall Performance in a Video and Best Choreography in a Video.
The event was thought of as more of a show than a simple ceremony: with performances from the biggest music stars of the time, it aimed to completely dazzle the audience. With performances from many artists such as David Bowie (Blue Jean), Tina Turner (What’s Love Got to Do With It) and Madonna’s memorable rebound when she turned a fashion mishap into a successful dance move as she was performing her hit song ‘’Like a Virgin’’, the show was a complete success.
For the past 35 years, the ceremony has been an annual summer rendezvous for teens and young adults, with millions of them gathering in front of their TV and hoping for their favorite star to be rewarded.
Who is voting and what are the categories?
Talking about the rewards, how are they attributed and what are the categories?
The show has always rewarded the artists for a multitude of categories, ranging from the classical Artist of the Year and Song of the Year to more far-fetched ones such as Monster Single of the Year (2007), Best Artist Website (1999) and even Ringtone Of The Year (2006).

The viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite artists, music videos, etc. to ensure the rewarded is truly the people’s favourite.
How does the show present itself?
The MTV Video Music Awards are always presented by a celebrity host who will present the artists, categories and performers. It’s had many hosts since it started in 1981, including the famous Eddie Murphy who hosted the show in 1985 and whose 5-minute monologue at the beginning of the show truly set the bar for what was expected of a VMA host.
In 2007, the comedian Jack Black also made his mark on the show as he gave the audience a lot of good laughs and even set himself on fire during the show opening. Closer to us, Katy Perry presented the VMA in 2017 and really set off the audience when she opened the show with a short trip to Mars.
If you are thinking that the hosts are truly strange and nothing surpassing that could happen at an Award Ceremony, think again. The Rolling Stones compilation of the 15 best and worst VMA moments will show you how the show can create epic TV moments for the world to enjoy.
The 2019 host will be Sebastian Maniscalco that was dubbed the ‘’comedian’s comedian’’ by People Magazine. The stand-up comedian, who will be performing at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas this October, is one of the many comedians and performers hosted by the casino this year. You might have heard of some of the others: Lionel Ritchie, Ali Wong, Drake…
Back to the MTV Music Awards, don’t forget to vote for your favourite artist before the 15th of August and we’re counting on you to cheer for the best performer on the 26th!
