As the world coasts into another winter season, we can look forward to staying warm inside watching major winter sports events. From hockey championships in Nova Scotia to the next Winter Olympics in Beijing, Gaming Club is bringing a list of top winter sports to watch for the next couple years.

Ice Hockey 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship

Held every year, the IIHF Women’s World Championship is overseen by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The next one will be hosted in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia, from March 31 to April 10, 2020.

In 2019, the United States claimed the title, landing their ninth world championship. Canada had a winning streak before from 1990 until 2004. Participating teams are from Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, and the United States. With Canada and the United States heading off the preliminary round, these are the two teams to watch.

2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

Coming soon to the Czech Republic, the 44th World Junior Ice Hockey Championships will be played from December 26, 2019, to January 5, 2020. Hosted for the fourth time in the Czech Republic, the gold medal game will conclude on the last day.

The preliminary round includes teams from Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia, and Kazakhstan. Group B includes the United States, Russia, Canada, Czech Republic, and Germany. Also known as the “World Juniors”, this championship is for under-20 ice hockey players. Finland won last year for the fifth time and, while Canada placed 6th last year, they are favoured for the gold this year, although they will meet tough competition from the USA and Russia.

2020 World Men’s Curling Championship

Considered Canada’s own sport, curling is played by many countries around the world. International teams meet every year for the World Men’s Curling Championship, which has been occurring since 1959. This next year the championship will be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, and will take place from March 28 to April 5, 2020.

Predictably, Canada has dominated the championships since they were established in 1959. However, other teams have done well, including Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the United States, Scotland, and China. Last year Sweden won. Since Canada was favoured last year and did not take home the title, it is too soon to make predictions for 2020.

2020 Winter Youth Olympics

From January 9-22 Lausanne, Switzerland, will host the third Winter Youth Olympics. Including 8 sports and 16 disciplines, athletes aged 14 to 18 from 71 nations will arrive for the celebration of diverse cultures and athletic prowess at this exciting event.

Previous hosting cities have been Innsbruck, Austria, and Lillehammer, Norway. Sports include alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsled, snowboarding, speed skating, and ice hockey. The upcoming stars to watch will be 16-year-old Japanese snowboarder, Kaishu Hirano, brother of Ayumu, a double silver medallist. Another is Germany’s 16-year-old speed skater, Victoria Stirnemann. She is the daughter of three-time Olympic champion Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann.

2020 Biathlon World Championships

With it roots planted in Nordic origins, the biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Athletes compete in numerous races and speed events where the goal is to achieve the shortest total time. Missed shots dock the contestants distance or time points.

Wierer won the gold for Mass Start at the 2019 world championships and is expected to do well next year in her home location of Italy.

2022 Winter Olympics

Although it is still a couple years off, we can’t forget the king of all winter events – the Winter Olympics. Hosted in Beijing in 2022, the hotly anticipated event will take place February 4-22. Beijing also hosted the Summer Olympics in 2008, making it the first city to be chosen to host both the Winter and Summer Olympics.
