Netflix’s Self Made

Even in today’s world, it’s hard to become a self-made millionaire. But in the late 1800s, especially for a black woman in America, it was unheard of. That was, until Madam CJ Walker came along. You can watch the story of her success in Netflix’s upcoming series Self Made. Madam CJ Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, and didn’t have an easy start to life. She was born into a family of sharecroppers in Louisiana, and her parents died when she was only six years old. She was married by fourteen and widowed six years later, left to take care of a young daughter on her own.

When she began to lose her hair years later, she began a revolution in black women’s hair care. She couldn’t find a treatment that suited her, so she created her own and marketed it to other black women. The venture grew with advertisements and by sharing women’s success stories, and it was also helped along by Walker’s own flair for business. She soon became well known and, eventually, became the America’s first black woman millionaire.

She enjoyed fame as any of us would want to—with a beautiful mansion in Manhattan. She also gave a lot of money to charity, including the NAACP and black YMCA, and provided a great workplace for her employees. She was also known for helping other women in business, including mandating that only women could serve as the president of her company in the future.

Today, the former headquarters of her business still stands in Indianapolis, in the historic district. Her estate, Villa Lewaro, is in Irvington, New York. It’s a National Historic Landmark and a beautiful building inside and out, which once hosted gatherings for leaders of the Harlem Renaissance movement, an important movement for black intellectuals in the 1920s.

The series: Self Made

Netflix announced in 2017 that they’d be running an eight-episode series based on a biography of Madam CJ Walker, written by her great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles. It’s slated to premiere on Netflix on March 20, 2020, with Octavia Spencer in the starring role.

Spencer is well known for appearing in The Help (2011), Hidden Figures (2016), and The Shape of Water (2017), among many others. Many of her roles are related to historical figures and the American Civil Rights movement. She’s joined in Self Made by other stars like Blair Underwood (L.A. Law) and Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip). The series is produced by LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and several others.

The series will follow Madam CJ Walker’s rise as an entrepreneur, and also focus on her family and how she overcame struggles as a black woman in pre-Civil Rights America. It also tells stories of business rivalries, family and personal drama, and Walker’s fight for social change.

The trailer and press photos give us a look at the look and feel of the series, which is full of beautiful sets, retro costume design, and view of the vintage world where Spencer built her empire.
