There are essentially two types of players at casinos. There are those who play by instinct or gut feel, and those who take a very mathematical approach and carefully calculate the odds of every move. The question is, which type of player actually has the upper hand. It’s quite a complex question, as there are a lot of factors involved. Let’s look at each type and what makes them different.
Players who play by instinct or on gut feel fall into a number of categories. There are those that are just there for the fun, or for the opportunity to unwind. These players are often happy to let the fates fall where they will and won’t try too hard to beat the system or work out the best odds.
Then there are the players who trust their instincts. They are regular players, they take the games quite seriously, but they are also happy to watch the games and see how the flow of dice rolls or cards is turning out. If they are playing with a live dealer or against other players they may find themselves instinctively keeping an eye on how others are playing, and balance their actions against them.
Then there are the mathematical players. These players tend to love games such as craps or roulette, as they have carefully calculated the odds on each of the different bets. They may also love a game of blackjack or poker as this gives them an opportunity to calculate the odds of various combinations of cards that could put them in a winning position.
So back to the question, who does better?
Unfortunately, there is no finite answer. The instinctual players often aren’t even aware of the fact that the feelings they have about the next move is actually based on processes happening in the back of their mind, and that the instinct is actually a talent. On the other hand, clever mathematical minds can use strategies to minimise their losses and keep the game going longer to give them the best chance. They also spend a great deal of time working or practicing a casino game before they start placing real money bets.
What we do know is that if you were to match a player with strong instincts against a strong mathematical player, it would be a very interesting game.
